Event Details

For the Door County Historical Society's first Monday dinner program of 2020, they will be joined by Charlotte Lukes.

       

This program about Roy Lukes give a look at his wide interest in natural science and how he turned to this after his post-high school days of playing in several traveling dance bands. It will show the steps he took to become a self-taught naturalist through his involvement with numerous non-profit organizations and a lot of volunteer work.


A major part of the program will be about The Ridges Sanctuary and his position as their first manager and resident naturalist. It will also detail efforts to preserve the Toft Point State Natural Area.The program will include some of the people who influenced Roy as well as a few of the young people he helped to further their careers in natural history.

 

Charlotte Lukes and Roy were married in 1972 and worked as a team to help the Door County community learn, appreciate, and preserve the valuable natural resources here. She was a dental hygienist for 34 years but learned about wild mushrooms and now teaches classes and leads hikes each year. She continues to write the weekly Door to Nature column in the Peninsula Pulse and presents slide programs for many groups in the area.


The menu for this dinner program is Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes and all the fixings, and dessert.
